The Shape of Things by Simone Brewster

29th June - 24th September 2023

We visited the NOW Gallery in Greenwich to see the opening of Simone Brewster's The Shape of Things exhibition at the end of June 👀

We walked the scenic route from our studio along the river to North Greenwich which is always a pleasant trip on a summers evening. The gallery was in full swing by the time we got there which was amazing to see.

The live DJ set was courtesy of Just Vibez who was setting the tone for the whole evening by playing a lively mixture of music from the Caribbean, Africa, Latin America and UK. The skaters were loving it!

Pops of bright colours welcomed us into the space as each art discipline had its own section. Items such as jewellery, furniture and paintings were all showcased on custom made display units which were also artworks in themselves.

The walls were adorned with Brewster's large scale acrylic and oil pastel paintings; "In Flight", "Inside Outside in Blue", "Inner Voice", "Dancing: With Pink", "Back to Front" and "Sitting Bare: In Blue"

During the private view, there was a chance to engage in the live activity. Reminiscent of childhood memories, Brewster had provided her own wooden block stamps, ink pads and sheets of A5 paper for attendees to create their own geometric works of art.

We managed to find all the right shapes to recreate the Stööki Vision mascot 😃

Brewster presented a new series of comb sculptures for this exhibition, inspired by African hairstyles. All of which are wearable and celebrate the designer's heritage.

The jewellery on show focuses on blending natural materials throughout all the pieces featured in this exhibition. Also highlighted, is a commitment between designing and creating across mediums that blend traditional hand craft with new technology.

Described by Simone in her own words: The Shape of Things presents a diverse range of works from furniture to painting, jewellery and sculpture that investigate the hidden language behind design that are inherently entwined with societal norms and ideas of race, gender, equality and more.

The exhibition is on until 24th September and there are also some live drawing events which you can get involved with on 19th July too. Sign up here - NOW Later: Draw-In
